Whether you are new to English Rural Housing Association (or one of our subsidiary companies) or an existing member of staff, I hope you find this staff handbook helpful. At first sight it may look somewhat daunting, but it is broken down into sections to make it easier to look up the subject of your interest or enquiry.
Our success and growth in recent years is the result of the commitment and hard work of the staff, supported by the Board of Management. People are at the heart of our ethos which is about helping to maintain the economic and social well-being of rural communities through housing services.
Ethos and culture are not easily translated into the written word but are nevertheless real and recognisable to our residents, partners, and ourselves. They underpin our goal to become the leading provider of rural affordable housing.
As English Rural has grown, so has the need to develop policies and procedures to provide a framework of reference for our work, hence this staff handbook. It will be updated from time to time, as necessary.
I hope that you find this staff handbook helpful and that your time with us is both enjoyable and satisfying.
Mark Pragnell, Chair
English Rural Housing Association
A Registered Provider that works with rural communities to build and manage affordable homes.
Since 1991, our non-profit organisation has been working tirelessly to provide affordable housing options to rural communities in England. Our team is dedicated to ensuring that every individual has access to a safe, stable home, no matter where they live.
We are proud to be recognised and regulated by the Regulator of Social Housing, and we are committed to upholding the highest standards of excellence in all that we do. It is an honour to have HRH The Princess Royal serve as our Patron and support our efforts to make a difference in the lives of those we serve.
Within the English Rural Group there are two further subsidiaries. Firstly, The Cambridgeshire Cottage Housing Society (TCCHS) which joined through merger in 2022. TCCHS is a small rural housing association that owns around 65 homes mainly across rural South Cambridgeshire. Secondly, ER Homes Ltd which was established as a commercial subsidiary to undertake a modest programme of homes for sale, with surpluses generated gift aided back to English Rural to further its charitable objects.
As a non-profit organisation, English Rural exists to provide and manage housing services which help to sustain the economic and social life of rural communities. English Rural works in partnership with those communities, local authorities and other agencies and aims to be the foremost specialist provider of rural affordable housing in England.
Our Vision
Putting rural communities front and centre is key to our vision: “For rural communities to thrive, we believe local people deserve to live in high–quality, well–managed homes that are comfortable, safe and affordable.”
Our Mission
So that we can deliver on our vision, we need to be clear about our mission. We need to build more affordable rural homes. We need to build them with and for the local community. Our mission is: “To build and manage affordable housing for local people in rural communities in England and to be an advocate for affordable rural housing.”
